On Tuesday, May 8 2007, the Society hosted an Asian Pacific American Public Service Youth Forum. A select group of DC-area middle and high school students met for a day-long session. The morning began with an overview of Asian American history from Dr. Franklin Odo, Director of the Smithsonian Institution Asian Pacific American Program. Next, the students interacted with a panel of Asian American Congressional staffers, who talked about the various paths they took to Capitol Hill jobs and then answered the students’ questions. Sonia Crawford, a correspondent for ABC News, served as moderator for the session.
Former Congressman, Norm Mineta, opened the afternoon session with a wide-ranging talk about his experiences with Japanese American internment and his role as Secretary of Transportation during the September 11 attacks. The event ended with question and answer session between the students.
The Society thanks
